QEST was invited to decorate Buckingham Palace's Summer House to celebrate the Coronation Festival. Seven scholars were involved in crafts that will remain within this legacy project. They have painted a trompe l'oeil on the ceiling and a mural on the walls of the octagonal building set within the garden. Two upholsterers worked on existing furniture and a contemporary dining table, made from English walnut and cherry woods was especially made, whilst a letter carver has designed a plaque commemorating QEST and a wicker corgi has been constructed to bring a note of informality to the Coronation Festival from the 11th to 14th July 2013.

The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) was endowed by the Royal Warrant Holders Association to advance education in modern and traditional crafts and trades in the UK. Scholarships of up to £18,000 are open to men and women of all ages and are awarded twice a year. Since 1991, the Trust has awarded £2 million to nearly 300 craftsmen and women aged between 17 and 50+ to develop their skills through study, training and work experience. The Trust supports 130 crafts.

With three hundred QEST scholars on the database the difficulty was selecting the artisans for this project. Most scholars are recognised internationally as ambassadors of their craft and it was important that those selected reflected the unique atmosphere of the Summer House. Penny Bendall, a ceramics conservator, a Royal Warrant holder and a QEST Trustee was the ideal curator. She worked together with an assistant, Julia Robinson and QEST's PR Shelley-Anne Claircourt and the Royal Household every step of the way, to ensure that everything selected would not only be a fitting presentation of the scholars' work but also be something that will be cherished in future years.
